Frequently Asked Questions - PEMF THERAPY
(Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields)
What is PEMF Therapy?
PEMF Therapy is a non-invasive, electromagnetic treatment that delivers pulsed electromagnetic fields to the body to stimulate healing and wellness at the cellular level.
Is PEMF Therapy Safe?
Yes, PEMF Therapy is considered safe and has been used for decades. It is non-invasive and does not involve harmful radiation.
How Does PEMF Therapy Work?
PEMF devices generate magnetic fields that penetrate the body. These fields stimulate cellular activity, promoting better circulation, oxygenation, and energy production.
What Conditions Can PEMF Therapy Address?
PEMF therapy can be used to address a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, inflammation, sleep disorders, and injuries, among others.
Is PEMF Therapy Painful?
No, PEMF therapy is generally painless. Some people may feel a gentle pulsing or tapping sensation during treatment.
Newcomers to PEMF technology often wonder what physical sensations they will experience while pulsing. Some may even be nervous or apprehensive as many modalities can be uncomfortable if not outright painful. Fortunately, PEMF devices allow your Certified PEMF Professional to set the controls to your comfort. This customization and the attention of your Certified PEMF Professional together diminish the possibility of discomfort, both during and after a session.
In most cases, pulsing is a gentle, soothing experience. If you experience discomfort, it could mean that the Magnetic Field Strength (MFS) is too strong or that the Pulses Per Second (PPS) are not at a comfortable rate. In either case, communication is key! Remember to provide your Certified PEMF Professional with feedback so that they can adjust the settings to your comfort.
How Long Does a PEMF Session Last?
The duration of a session can vary, but it typically ranges from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the specific treatment and the device used.

What's the Difference Between High-Intensity and Low-Intensity PEMF Devices?
High-intensity PEMF devices are typically used in clinical settings, while low-intensity devices are suitable for home use. Your choice should align with your treatment goals and the recommendation of a healthcare professional.
Are There Any Age Restrictions for PEMF Therapy?
In general, PEMF therapy is suitable for people of all ages. However, it's advisable to adjust the treatment parameters for children and the elderly, and always consult with a healthcare provider.
Who should NOT have PEMF Therapy?
If you have a pacemaker, are pregnant, have a history of seizure, or have any electronic device implanted in your body (that cannot be removed for the session), PEMF is not an option for you. Please ask us about other appointment types that may be helpful.
Will I Have to Undress for the PEMF?
No, all PEMF therapy can be done while you are fully clothed. You are welcome to remove your shoes, if you like.
How Far Apart Should I Space my PEMF Sessions?
Since the effects are cumulative, it is recommend, when your first start PEMF, that you come at least twice a week, but you can come every day if that works for you. After your initial series of appointments, we offer packages and maintenance plans with weekly or monthly sessions – depending on your case.
What Happens During a PEMF Session?
Pulse PEMF devices send pulsing magnetic fields through a soft, flexible rubber coil to our exclusive PEMF accessories, which then transfer the energy into the body. As the energy delivery takes place, the cell membrane is permeated (Novickij) which expels waste and toxins from the cells. The energy of the pulsed fields also provides the cells with fresh oxygen and nutrients. This process stimulates and exercises the cells, giving them more energy to do their jobs better.Novickij V, Dermol J, Grainys A, Kranjc M, Miklavčič D. Membrane permeabilization of mammalian cells using bursts of high magnetic field pulses. PeerJ. 2017;5:e3267. Published 2017 Apr 26. doi:10.7717/peerj.32
Can PEMF Trigger Detoxification Symptoms?
PEMF is used as a wellness modality to support natural detoxification within the body. The magnetic field of PEMF travels on the electrical current that exists in the body. Then, the electrically-based cell membranes respond to the electromagnetic fields of PEMF. As PEMF stimulates and exercises the cell membrane, the ions on either side of the membrane trigger the open and close mechanism of the cell, allowing it to release unwanted toxins.
Does PEMF Treat or Address Health Conditions?
Pulse PEMF devices do not treat or diagnose any diseases, illnesses, or injuries. PEMF is a modality meant for general wellness as it stimulates and exercises the cells. PEMF supports the body’s natural healing and regulating abilities. If you have health concerns, consult your licensed healthcare provider.
How is PEMF Different from Harmful EMFs?
Harmful electromagnetic fields (EMF) have been recognized in various research studies to have significantly higher frequencies and lower wavelengths than PEMF. For example, mobile phones release EMFs at a frequency around 900-1800 MHz, whereas Pulse PEMF systems remain under 10 Hz. Instead of intense, harmful radiation, PEMF releases pulsed fields of electromagnetic energy to exercise and stimulate the cells.
What to Expect During the Session?
Of course, experiences will vary as there are several factors such as the settings, accessories used, and your individual wellness. However, most people experience the following during their first session:
• Small muscle contractions
• Noticeable pulsing and stimulation in certain areas
• Movement of the pulsing action as it stimulates different regions of the body
• Areas of sensitivity
• Possible lightheadedness or nausea
Again, communication is vital to this process as your feedback will inform the decisions of your Certified PEMF Professional. If you are feeling any discomfort, ask them to reduce the strength or move you to the cooldown portion of the session.
What to Expect After Your First PEMF Session?
PEMF can have a wide range of biologic effects. An individual’s diet, lifestyle, level of activity, hydration, general health, stress levels and the quality of your nutrition all contribute to how PEMF will work and how you feel after your first few sessions.
After your first session, you may experience over the next few hours one or more of the following:
1). You may feel a significant reduction in pain. Experience has shown us that most people will experience reduced pain by 50% or more.
2). You may sleep like a baby and enjoy the best night's rest you've had in ages.
3). Some will feel tired after their first few sessions.
4). PEMF therapy, also known as cellular exercise, will typically lower blood pressure so if you already have very low blood pressure, you may feel lightheaded. By drinking water and staying seated, this usually
passes in 15 minutes or less.
5). Many feel invigorated with unexpected amounts of energy to spare.
6). You are likely to be thirsty from the increased cellular metabolism.
7). Some will feel worse in the following 12 to 24 hours. This can occur from to much PEMF to a particular area, the release of toxins, or the body experiencing pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi and microorganisms) dying off. Drink plenty of water. Get back on the full body PEMF accessory at a very low setting for 10 - 60 minutes can help to enhance the detox process.
8). If you had swelling, you should see it diminish by the end of the session with continued improvement in the following hours.
9). No noticeable change with a painful issue? There are often multiple underlying causes for dysfunction and the pain that requires a series of sessions in order to experience an improvement. The energy will continue to work over the next several hours and you should notice change within 12 - 24 hours, with improvements lasting up to 72 hours. That's why we recommend hour-long sessions. Not only does an hour provide enough time to charge the entire body, it allows additional time necessary to support the detox systems in your body to carry away metabolic waste and toxins.
Do I Need a Doctor Referral to Schedule an Appointment?
While many of our clients come to us at the recommendation of their physician, a referral is not required.
What if I Have Had Joint Replacement Surgery?
That’s no problem. Even if you have metal screws, plates, rods, or joints, you can still participate in PEMF Therapy
